How I dress, decorate my home, eat, travel and what I listen to are constantly evolving, but why?
A designer is making a myriad of judgements and decisions, look, feel, practicality, cultural connotations, all while stress testing it for a market that is up to two years in advance.
This 'translation' of cultural signals, practical needs and aesthetic judgements into a real and desirable product is an art form, it is your taste.
Working with many design teams over the years, a designer with ‘good taste’ is actually fluent in this language of creative knowledge.
This can make it hard for creatives to say ‘why’ their idea is the best solution to the problem.
For creatives - OUR TASTE IS OUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE.
Learn to interrogate your taste.
Give yourself time to understand your why, what have you seen, felt and understood that led you to your design?
Point to the cultural signals that you should move toward, to the aesthetic judgements that align with shifts in cultural sentiment, the information you will NOT find in the sales figures.
For business leaders, what knowledge do your taste experts have?
Ask WHY they feel this design will work, what cultural signals are they picking up on, where are we going next? Learn to trust their instinct.
